Facebook and Twitter have created a generation obsessed with themselves, who have short attention spans and a childlike desire for constant feedback on their lives, a top scientist believes.

Repeated exposure to social networking sites leaves users with an 'identity crisis', wanting attention in the manner of a toddler saying: 'Look at me, Mummy, I've done this.' Baroness Greenfield, professor of pharmacology at Oxford University, believes the growth of internet 'friendships' – as well as greater use of computer games – could effectively 'rewire' the brain. This can result in reduced concentration, a need for instant gratification and poor non-verbal skills, such as the ability to make eye contact during conversations.

 A typical checking lasts less than 30 seconds and involves opening the screen lock and accessing a single application.
The researchers, from Helsinki Institute for Information Technology, were surprised to find users engaging in checking behaviours throughout the waking hours.
Lead researcher Antti Oulasvirta said: 'What concerns us here is that if your habitual response to, say, boredom, is that you pick up the phone to find interesting stimuli, you will be systematically distracted from the more important things happening around you.
'Habits are automatically triggered behaviours and compromise the more conscious control that some situations require.'
A sizable proportion of smartphone use consists solely of checkings, the team said.
Checkings do not occur randomly, but are associated with a small set of contexts that trigger them, such as reading email when commuting or checking news while bored.

'Studies are already starting to associate smartphone use to dire consequences like driving accidents and poor work-life balance'

Despite its prevalence, users did not regard checking behaviour as an addiction, but described it in terms of overuse and as an annoyance.
And scientists believe smartphone owner's checking habits may change in the near future as more and more informational 'rewards' are introduced.

Ladies, tell me you agree. There is a horrific beauty double standard going on that we have to do something about. Now that it's summer, we've all been upping our beauty game— more shaving and waxing, keeping toenails in check— so the terrible grooming habits of our guys have become all the more glaring. Why is stomach-turning neglect (or in certain cases, too much attention) the norm? We're not asking guys to do anything we don't do ourselves. 

after all this been said..they all chewed away our norms, our norms.

1. Long, dirty toe nails. Or, as one Threader called it, "Hobbit feet." I love that. It's true. Guys, you don't have to sit for a pedicure, but there's no excuse for claws filled with dirt.

2. Hair where it shouldn't be. Nose hair was the number-one complaint with ear hair a close second. "Why is it so hard to buy a trimmer and a mirror?" asked a completely reasonable Threader. We don't have the answer.

3. Mouth madness. This is just basics. We're brushing, flossing, and whitening, but certain guys seem to think they can get away with "yuck mouth," as a Threader called it. Not true.

4. Unattractive smells. This can mean not showering often enough or not embracing deodorant. This is also related to #3 (see above).

5. Eyebrow issues. Either overgrown or over plucked. We don't want unruly, caveman hairs, but we also don't want you to look more sculpted than we do.


6. Too much cologne. If everything you touch starts to smell like your medicine cabinet, that's not good.


7. Too much waxing. There's grooming and then there's grooming. No one wants to feel like they're with a newborn.


8. Dry, cracked heels. You can put lotion on them, you know.


9. Hair that never moves. If your hair is as hard as a car door, you've got to rethink your products.

 
10. Letting your blackheads live on. Everyone has zits, especially in the hot and sweaty summer. But, jeez, if you have blackheads on your face, deal with them or book a facial where someone else will

truthfully i did TOLD myslef to walk into the restroom to take a quick check.
double check...when i came out ..them ladies were all smiling and looking my way.
so, i concluded that i was alright or all most perfect.

   Friday Weird Science: Penis Spines, what are they REALLY?

I'm sure by now everyone here has heard about the Penis Spine Story. The actual paper involved bigger brains as well as penis spines...but who cares about brains when PENIS SPINES are around?? Yeah I didn't think so.
When I read the coverage of the penis spines, and heard it was the technical term, I was really confused. I thought, isn't the technical term the baculum? The bone in the penis of animals like mice and chimps and dogs, which facilitates erections. Humans don't have them. Penis Spine, baculum, makes sense, right? I was completely mystified as to why people weren't just calling it the baculum and seemed to be talking like there was more than one!!! Surely they didn't mean something like THIS:

 And lo and behold, they DID mean ACTUAL PENIS SPINES!!! BE STILL MY HEART. I still didn't believe it, until Eric Michael JohnsonZinjanthropus! Check it out!) mentioned a need for a paper. And the paper...was on penis spines.
